Suomen tähtitieteilijäseura ry / The Finnish Astronomical Society
Perustettu/Est. 1969

Suomen Tähtitieteilijäseuran toimintaperiaatteena on tähtitieteellisen tutkimustyön edistäminen Suomessa.

The Finnish Astronomical Society works to advance astronomical research in Finland. Teaching and research in astronomy is focused in the Universities of Helsinki, Oulu, Turku and the Aalto University and astronomical research institutes, the Tuorla Observatory (University of Turku) and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory (Aalto University), and the Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO FINCA. The society's membership consists of almost all of the professional astronomers in Finland, with over a hundred researcher, student, teacher or journalist working with astronomy. More information about membership can be found here.

Every second year the society organises the Astronomer's Days and other scientific meetings and symposia when needed. The society has representatives in national science organisations, and it organises Finland's national membership in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal. Contacts are also maintained with the representatives of the Finnish government and other entities (e.g., the Academy of Finland), which fund or otherwise influence Finnish astronomy research. The society can give statements in various astronomical matters, and provide information in issues related to the field.
